Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 presented a strategic direction with three overarching themes reports IDC VP Devices EMEA  Francisco Jeronimo from Cupertino  (main pic).

There is a comprehensive design overhaul across all its platforms, the introduction of a new OS naming convention, and continued development of Apple Intelligence.

This year’s event was not about disruptive innovation, but rather careful calibration, platform refinement and developer enablement – positioning itself for future moves rather than unveiling game-changing technologies.

At the heart of WWDC 2025 was a comprehensive naming overhaul of Apple’s software platforms. iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, visionOS, and tvOS are all being rebranded under a year-based naming convention – iOS 26, macOS 26 (Tahoe), and so on – signaling a shift toward a more predictable, aligned cadence across the Apple ecosystem.

For Apple, 2025 is shaping up as a transitional year. The company is maintaining user trust and developer interest, but it is not pushing the envelope in AI, a domain where rivals are moving quickly. Apple is not, at least publicly, making radical shifts in AI strategy in direct response to competitive pressures. Historically favoring execution over experimentation, Apple often enters new spaces by delivering the best possible experience to delight users.

This approach to AI, despite short-term criticism, suggests a degree of confidence in its long-term approach, or perhaps an acknowledgement that a more profound AI pivot requires more time.

It is important to remember that for the majority of consumers, AI remains a novelty, and many still do not full understand its benefits. Apple needs to continue focusing on its large installed base of users who prioritize improved experiences in the apps and services they use and love, rather than disruptive innovation every single year.

However, the stakes are rising. As competitors aggressively embed AI into their platforms, Apple face increasing pressure to deliver compelling intelligencedriven experiences. If WWDC 2025 is any indication, the groundwork is being laid – but the real test comes next year.

WWDC 2025 reflects Apple’s strategic posture in 2025: deliver reliable improvements, avoiding overpromising in areas where competitors lead, and quietly preparing for more ambitious updates down the line.

Translucent

But this new branding is more than cosmetic. The user interface (UI) across platforms has been redesigned with a Liquid Glass aesthetic, emphasising light, transparency and depth, heavily influenced by the visionOS UI.

The look and feel – with more translucent menus, updated icons, and redesigned toolbars – brings Apple’s mobile, desktop and XR environments closer together. These changes bring a more visually appealing experience, more clarity to navigation and controls, and provide a more polished overall user experience.

Strategically, Apple appears to be leveraging a refreshed and unified user experience as a primary means to preserve ecosystem loyalty and stimulate hardware upgrades. By making the experience more cohesive, it implicitly raises the friction for users considering a switch to competing platforms, while offering a new aesthetic standard that could make Android interfaces appear dated.

Intelligence

If the tech industry was hoping for Apple to make a grand leap forward in artificial intelligence, they will have to keep waiting. While Apple Intelligence was central to the announcements, its presence was more about setting direction, keep incrementing app functionality, rather than introducing new disruptive futuristic applications.

The most significant AI-related news is the decision to open up Apple’s foundation models to developers. For the first time, with the new Foundations Model Framework, developers will be able to access the same on-device and Private Cloud models used for features like Genmoji, writing tools and summarization. This step brings Apple closer to the kind of AI tools that competitors such as OpenAI, Google and Meta have been offering for some time. This move to empower developers is strategically important, as it allows Apple to leverage its vast developer community to infuse the ecosystem with AI capabilities and more specialized AI applications.

There are also tangible improvements for users: Apple Intelligence is expanding to new countries and will support additional languages. The key consumer-facing AI upgrade is a push into translation. Building on the existing Translate app, Live Translation is being integrated more deeply with Messages, FaceTime and the Phone App. There are two important additions to the Phone app – Call Screening and Hold Assist – will improve privacy by filtering spam or unwanted calls.

Visual Intelligence also gets an important update. The iPhone will now identify additional information about screenshots, offer to add relevant events to the Calendar, or allow users to ask ChatGPT for more details about the image content.

Other AI enhancements include an upgrade to Genmoji, which can now combine standard emojis into custom expressions. The Shortcuts app has also been upgraded using Apple intelligence models, enabling more powerful and intuitive user-created automations with intelligent actions. Users will be able to tap into Apple models (on-device, private cloud compute, or even ChatGPT), directly from Shortcuts. More announcements were made for watchOS, tvOS and iPadOS, which will resonate well with consumers.

Currently, Apple’s AI strategy, as showcased, leans more towards systemic integration and developer empowerment rather than delivering groundbreaking consumer-facing AI functionalities that have captured market attention. While this carries the risk of competitors moving faster, it also delineates a potential pathway for Apple to offer differentiated value, likely centered on its traditional pillars of privacy and seamless integration.

This is a classic Apple modus operandi, but it now confronts significant challenges amid the ongoing AI gold rush.

Notably absent is any significant overhaul to Siri, which is expected in 2026. Meanwhile, Apple’s voice interface remains significantly behind rivals in both intelligence and utility – a gap increasingly problematic given the accelerated pace of AI innovation elsewhere. However, Apple was hamble enough to explain that is not willing to compromise the experience for the sake of speed, which is the exact right strategy. Consumers are not yet all hooked on AI features and the majority don’t even understand the benefits. Bringing an AI Siri experience that won’t delight users, will hinder not just Apple, but the entire industry.

iPad and Mac

On the iPad, Apple is bringing the iPad and the Mac even closer. The introduction of more Mac-like multitasking features, is a sign of the company’s continued ambition to evolve the iPad into a true productivity tool. This is a continuation of Apple’s long term strategy to position the iPad, particularly its Pro models, as a viable laptop replacement for productivity-focused tasks. For users, this could mean a significantly more efficient workflow when managing multiple applications.

The new macOS Tahoe will fully embrace the new Liquid Glass design, including fresh designs for the menu bar and window buttons. The Control Centre has been redesigned, and, for the first time, it will be possible to add third-party apps.

A new Preview app will be introduced on the iPad, which will allow users to open and edit PDF files, as well as images.

There’s also an important development in Audio and Video: users will be able to select which microphone to use. Local Capture (Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, Zoom and Webex), will allowdifferent inputs to be used recordings combined – an excellent feature for podcasting.

Spotlight on macOS got a massive revamp to improve user experience. Users will be able to select the types of content they want to browse. A new Actions app will allow creating actions directly from Spotlight. It will be also context-aware, understanding what is on screen and possible actions.

Vision OS

For the visionPro headset, visionOS 26 introduces key features aimed at improving usability and broadening adoption among consumers and enterprises. Eye scrolling aims to make navigation more intuitive, while third-party controller support (Sony PlayStation VR controllers) expands input options beyond eye and hand tracking – critical for certain applications, especially gaming. Shared experiences (supporting up to five users) will enable content sharing and multiplayer gaming, making visionPro a more collaborative device.

Watch OS

The standout feature is the introduction of a Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence. The device will analyse the entire workout history and provide personalized insights. Using voices from Fitness+ trainers, the feature aims to offer support and motivation during exercise.

Thousands of unsuspecting buyers of used iPhones across the world have been sold devices containing a concealed microchip that deceptively hides the true status of battery health.

In reality, these batteries may be significantly worn down or even near depletion, misleading customers about their device’s true condition.

Arrow shows where the tiny chips are concealed

The microchips, which cost as little as £1.50, enable refurbishers to deliver phones to traders without incurring the cost of replacing a battery which may be out of spec. These chips are inserted into recycled iPhones by rogue refurbishers, mainly operating out of China but also globally. Until now they have been undetectable by industry-standard quality control processes unless the phones are opened up.

Tiny fake battery health chips inserted into devices by rogue refurbishers (file pic)

The tiny chip is embedded among the phone’s components and connect to the battery, manipulating it to display a false state of excellent health—even when the true health reading may be 80 percent or lower.

Tony chips are barely 3 cm and are inserted into used iPhones by unscrupulous refurbisher to hide battery status.

Most insurance companies and network buyers will only purchase iPhones that still maintain at least 85 per cent of battery capacity. Typically, an iPhone will alert its owner with a pop-up notification if battery health is degraded, recommending repair. However, the rogue microchip suppresses this message, leading the second owner to believe their iPhone has a battery up to specification.

Third-party chips disrupt Battery Health true status messages,

When an iPhone undergoes refurbishment, companies face two choices: they can replace the battery at an estimated cost of around £65, or they can leave the unhealthy battery in place and insert the £1.50 component between the battery and the motherboard. As a result, both the iPhone and digital quality control tools “think” the battery is fully healthy, allowing it to pass industry-standard quality tests.

Chip connects to battery and was undetectable until BlankIT prdouced a non-invasive detection method to spot them without dismantling the phone

Previously, the only way to detect the rogue chip was to dismantle the phone and physically remove it. However, independent quality assurance and configuration company BlankIT has now developed a solution to identify iPhones with these rogue chips without dismantling the device.

The highest percentage of returns in the circular market is due to power or no-power faults. Now we know why. These third-party chips hide the true battery health, giving consumers a poor experience when buying secondary devices,” said BlankIT founder Paul Schofield.

“The market is increasingly competitive, with everyone looking for an edge. For top-tier buyers, such as networks and retailers, refurbished devices are primarily a cost-effective revenue stream. But if the iPhones are not fully verified, how would the buyer know if they’ve been tampered with?”

Schofield: shocked at the scale of the problem

We have been working closely with two major retailers who share our concern. In response to their concerns, we developed a solution to check if their stock has been compromised without opening the devices. This solution has been running in the background during our standard processing, and we were shocked by the volume of stock hiding these chips.”

Schofield estimates that a shockingly large volume of refurbished iPhones may contain these £1.50 chips, installed by rogue companies. On further investigation he suspects claims the fraudulent practise has been ongoing for about two years, enabling hundreds of thousands of iPhones to be sold without the need to install new batteries.

Inserting these tags into devices is shortsighted. The consumer receives a device that doesn’t perform as it should, making them less likely to purchase a used device again. This practice also disrupts the supply chain. If a buyer detects contaminated stock, they will cancel the order, return the delivery, and seek a new, untampered supply,” Schofield added.

Ricky Panesar, CEO of Apple prouducts repair specialists iCorrect, explained:

“Tag-on” flexes came about because Apple encrypted the microchip in its battery management system, storing battery health data on a read-only memory chip programmed at the factory. This change started with the iPhone 11, and by the iPhone 12, tag-on flexes began appearing, though the early versions weren’t great.

“In a perfect world,. with Right to Repair in mind) we’d just replace the old battery cell, move over the battery management system and let the iPhone recalibrate itself, thus no need for a tag-on flex.

Rickey Pansear:leaving these tags attached could cause the iPhone to fail

“But these flexes instead trick the iPhone into thinking the battery is always at 100 per cent, even if the battery cell hasn’t been replaced. We actually saw similar tech back with the iPhone 6s, where aftermarket batteries would still read 100 per cent after a year, even if the battery was struggling.

“The best way to use these tag-on flexes was as a temporary tool after swapping a battery cell. We’d leave it attached for about 20-30 minutes while the iPhone charged, letting the phone read the “new battery data.” After that, the flex could be removed, and the health would display accurately, depleting somewhat normally. We shared these insights with other repair firms, but most didn’t adopt this method since it added extra repair time.

“The biggest issue we found was that leaving these tags attached could cause the iPhone to fail, as Paul Schofield confirms It’s a huge problem as, when the flex fails as it shorts to ground mimicking a failed logic board.

“The iPhone was never designed to have an additional flex attached, especially within the power circuit via the battery. I couldn’t even imagine how many iPhones have been sold with these attached inside. Apple’s recent iOS 18.1 update should address many of these issues by allowing battery health visibility even with aftermarket batteries”.

]]>
The iPhone SE and basic iPhone 14 models are staying in the iPhone lineup which should help to maintain used value of these models as the iPhone 16 now moves to the top of the tree.

The iPhone 16 range is the usual standard (£799) Plus (£899), Pro (£999) , and the Pro Max (£1,199) models. Starting at the iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display, while the Plus model is a bump to a 6.7-inch screen. The Pro models have slightly larger displays compared to previous Pros, with a 6.3-inch screen and the Pro Max boasting a 6.9-inch display.  Rumours that the ’16’ would be eSIM-only in the UK ad EU were unfounded.

The ’14’s are now £599 and £699 but the ‘Pro’ variants have been dropped leaving the SE as a £429 entry point.

An addition on the 16 models is the “Capture” button, designed to improve the camera experience by allowing users to take photos, zoom, and focus with intuitive gestures. The Action Button, previously only available on Pro variants, is now available across the range

An addition on the 16 models is the “Capture” button

The 16’s A18 chip, delivering up to 30 per cent faster performance than its predecessor. A 48MP primary sensor improves low-light photography, alongside a 2x telephoto zoom feature. Pro models come with even more advanced camera capabilities, such as a potential 5x optical zoom and enhanced ultra-wide lenses.

Additionally, the 16 series suppors AI-driven features like Apple Intelligence which will be the main driver of iPhone upgrades to come. However the main AI features won’t  be coming to the UK as software updates until December.

The Pro’s main enhancements over the base ’16’ is with a more powerful A18 Pro chip and enhanced lenses and camera software.

CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood reckons the combination of Apple Intelligence and new camera features on the iPhone 16 will help spur upgrades from loyal Apple customers, particularly as Apple is positioning this latest update as being a future-proof purchase for customers wanting to get Apple Intelligence features as they roll out over the next few years.

“There is a growing feeling that smartphone updates have become a bit boring. Apple is not immune to this trend and is betting on software and AI to breathe new life into its most important product to reignite consumer interest and drive upgrade purchases. As expected, Apple Intelligence features will roll out progressively over the next few months and years. However, at present, a notable exclusion is the EU, where Apple is in a stand-off over compliance with the Digital Markets Act. We will be watching closely to see how European consumers react to missing out on the new Apple Intelligence features and whether it affects demand for the iPhone 16.

Wood: Apple Intelligence features will roll out progressively over the next few months and years

“Many of the features being offered by Apple Intelligence are similar to those previously showcased by Google and Samsung. However Apple put a heavy focus on privacy as a differentiator. CCS Insight’s research indicates that despite the enthusiasm for AI, about 43% of UK consumers surveyed expressed concerns about privacy and data security.

16 Pro and Pro Max models get slight size ump due to thnner bezels

“Camera Control was one of the biggest stories beyond Apple Intelligence. We believe it represents a concerted effort by Apple to allow users to interact with their iPhones in new ways in the era of AI. Although Camera Control will improve the overall experience of taking pictures and shooting videos it also allows people to trigger searches based on what they can see. This is something Google has been working on for years with visual search but Apple is hoping Camera Control will make it easier than ever for consumers to take advantage of this capability.

“We believe many people will immediately jump to the conclusion that Camera Control is merely a glorified shutter button for the camera. Although it does provide this capability it offers much more than that, its ability to offer additional capabilities including visual AI-powered search is very significant.”

The average age of used devices at the time of trade-in or upgrade has increased to 3.71 years, up from 3.64 years in Q1 2024.

This is according to Assurant’s report on emerging trends in the secondary mobile device market and the trade-in and upgrade patterns among consumers.

The increase in upgrade times is primarily driven by iPhones, which saw their average trade-in age rise from 3.63 years in the first quarter to 3.78 years in the second quarter. In contrast, the average age of Android smartphones at trade-in decreased slightly, from 3.67 years to 3.5 years, highlighting a shift in user behavior between these two major platforms.

Surge in Trade-In Values

Assurant allso highlights a rise in trade-in values for both Apple and Android devices. Android smartphones experienced a remarkable 37 percent increase in average trade-in value, reaching $103.45 compared to the previous quarter.

Apple iPhones, despite being older on average at the time of trade-in, did not see a decline in value. Instead, the average trade-in value for iPhones rose by 21 percent, from $163.47 in Q1 2024 to $198.01 in Q2 2024. The combined average trade-in value for all devices in the second quarter was $141.02, reflecting a robust demand for pre-owned mobile devices.

iPhone 11 Dominant

The Apple iPhone 11 continues to be a standout in trade-in programs, marking its ninth consecutive quarter as the most traded-in device. With a 31.01 percent share among the top five traded-in devices, the iPhone 11 remains the only 4G device to consistently rank at the top, even as 5G adoption grows. This enduring popularity underscores the iPhone 11’s strong market presence and consumer preference, despite the increasing availability of newer 5G models.

Tickets for Mobile News’ Circular Summit secondary market conference on October 22-23 at The Park Plaza London Riverbank are now available.

Regulator calls for evidence on innovative solutions to disrupt UK mobile number spoofing from abroad and mobile messaging scams

Phone companies will have to identify andblock calls from abroad under strengthened industry guidance introduced by Ofcom to protect the public from scam calls.

Current rules do not require operators to block all calls from abroad with +447 numbers so that genuine calls from UK callers roaming abroad are not blocked.

BT says  has stopped a million calls per day from entering its network within the first month of implementing anti-spam  measures

Ofcom is analysing the effectiveness, costs, risks and timescales of different technical solutions to tackle scam calls from abroad which spoof UK mobile numbers.

Ofcom says consumers are still receiving suspicious calls and texts. But there are signs of a decline in suspicious calls or texts.

In 2024, just under half of UK landline users said they’d received a suspicious call in the last three months, down from 56 per cent in 2021.

Mobile users also reported a decrease in receiving suspicious calls, from 45 per cent to 39 per cent over the same period. The incidence of suspicious text message has also fallen from 74 per cent in 2021 to 56 per cent in 2024.

Fussell: ““Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to contact people”

Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to contact people and to evade existing disruption measures. To continue our work on deterring mobile messaging scams, a second Call for Inputs, published today, sets out our understanding of the market including new analysis of how scams are perpetrated within it, and evidence on the current scale of the problem – including highlighting areas where data gaps .remain” said Lindsey Fussell, Ofcom’s Group Director for Networks and Communications.

Distress and financial harm

Criminals who defraud people by exploiting phone networks cause huge distress and financial harm to their victims. While there’s encouraging signs that scam calls and texts are declining, they remain widespread and we’re keeping our foot to the throttle to find new and innovative ways to tackle the problem.

““Criminals who defraud people by exploiting phone networks cause huge distress and financial harm to their victims”

Under our strengthened industry guidance, millions more scam calls from abroad which use spoofed UK landline numbers will be blocked, with similar plans underway for calls which spoof UK mobile numbers. We’re also challenging the industry and other interested parties to provide evidence on the best solutions to tackle mobile messaging scams:.

mistrust around answering phone calls

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, added:

With increasing mistrust around answering phone calls, consumers will welcome this development. Almost two thirds of Brits don’t answer the phone due to concerns about scams or scam callers. Ofcom’s six-month timeline may mean a delay before we see a reduction in these types of phone scams, as the deadline for these stricter measures to be implemented isn’t until the end of January.

Doku: “conumers will welcome this development

“Recent changes from providers such as EE and VMO2 to reduce the impact of scam calls show that this issue is being taken seriously. ]]> Apple has changed its repair processes in ts Self Service Repair programme to allow consumers and independent repair providers to use parts from donor devices that can be paired to the repaired product.

The parts calibration process will begin this fall with safeguards to block parts from lost or stolen devices being used.

The new process is designed to increase product longevity, and minimise the environmental impact of a repair. Used genuine Apple parts have full functionality and security of new genuine Apple parts.

Pairing” is the process of confirming whether or not a repair part is genuine and gathering information about the part. Apple says this critical to preserving the privacy, security of the iPhone. The new policy means security-critical components parts such as Face ID and Touch ID sensors can be calibrated after the part is installed.

Security-critical used components parts such as Face ID and Touch ID sensors can be calibrated after the part is installed.

Future iPhone releases will have support for used biometric sensors. Customers and service providers will no longer need to provide a device’s serial number when ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store for repairs not involving replacement of the logic board.

Apple will also extend its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts to deter stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts. The feature was designed to stop a lost or stolen iPhone from being reactivated. If a device under repair detects that a supported part was obtained from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted.

Apple stated: “As device longevity increases, Apple believes it’s important that a device’s second or third owners have access to its full part and repair histories. With Parts and Service history, located within Settings on iOS, Apple is the only smartphone company that transparently shows owners whether their device has been repaired and provides information about the parts used. This fall, Apple will expand Parts and Service History to additionally show whether a part is a new or used genuine Apple part.

“This upcoming enhancement to Apple’s repair processes is another step forward in the company’s commitment to improving access to safe and affordable repairs.

Self Service Repair was launched two years ago to gives access to manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools used at Apple Store and Apple Authorised Service Provider locations. It covers 40 Apple products in 33 countries and regions, and 24 languages.

In the last five years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training to more than 10,000 Independent Repair Providers and Apple Authorised Service Providers.

Anisha Bhatia, Senior Technology analyst at data and analytics company GlobalData commented.

Apple’s enhancement of its repair process to utilise used Apple parts is a win for the Right to Repair movement, while still allowing the tech giant to maintain control over repair revenues.

Apple is simplifying its repair process for both customers and service providers by doing away with its cumbersome parts pairing feature, for iPhone 15 series and newer phones. This will eliminate the need to provide a device’s serial number when ordering parts, making iPhone repair less bothersome which in turn will increase circular economy income for the tech giant.

OEMs have come under pressure by governments as the Right to Repair movement has gained tremendous momentum in the EU and the US. The EU passed its own ‘Right to Repair’ law in February 2024, and various repair bills have passed in four US states, with more right- to- repair bills being debated in legislatures across 28 other US states. Sustainability is a hot button topic right now, and sustainable devices with increased longevity potential are likely to generate brand loyalty for both telcos and OEMs that offer it as a differentiator.”
