Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone line-up, headlined by the ultra-thin 17 Air, in a move analysts say will not only reinvigorate interest in its flagship devices but also accelerate the global adoption of eSIM technology.

The announcement, made at Apple Park in Cupertino, marks the first time Apple has placed such a strong emphasis on design differentiation in years. The iPhone 17 range is being positioned as both a style statement and a catalyst for broader industry shifts.

eSIM goes global
The most significant shift, however, is Apple’s decision to make the iPhone 17 Air eSIM-only worldwide. Having already phased out the physical SIM tray in the US, Apple is now extending the change across multiple markets.

Apple is doubling down on eSIM with the iPhone 17 Air. Having established the eSIM-only iPhone as the default offering in the US, it is now pushing this technology around the world,” said Ben Wood of CCS Insight.

He noted that Apple’s track record suggests its decisions quickly set industry standards. “As we’ve seen numerous times in the past, when Apple embraces a new approach for example, removing the 3.5mm headset jack, others follow. In the case of eSIM, network operators need to support the technology. Apple claims there are already at least 500 networks that support eSIM. For those that don’t, there will be a mad panic to implement the capability as soon as possible.”

According to CCS Insight forecasts, 377 million smartphones shipped with eSIM support in 2024, accounting for 31% of all global shipments. iPhones represented half of this total. By 2030, the firm expects 843 million smartphones will feature eSIM, or 69% of the market.

Slimmer design rekindles interest
Paolo Pescatore, technology analyst at PP Foresight, said the new line-up looks well-positioned to appeal to multiple customer segments.

The new and much-improved iPhone line-up looks impressive, which puts it in a strong position to cater for different segments. Significantly, there is an iPhone for everybody at a reasonable price,” he said.

iPhone 17: screen size up to 6.3 inches
PEscatore: slimming down the device could set the stage for bigger form factor changes

According to Pescatore, Apple’s strategy to slim down the device mirrors moves made in other parts of its portfolio and could set the stage for bigger form factor changes in future.

A slimmer and lighter iPhone makes perfect sense, taking a proven strategy across from other product lines. It now paves the way for Apple to launch a foldable device further down the line,” he said.

Wood agrees the design refresh represents a critical turning point.

It has been a few years since Apple has had new iPhones that you could put on the table in a coffee shop, meeting room or pub, and people would ask, ‘Is that the new iPhone?’ With the iPhone 17 Air and the redesigned iPhone 17 Pro models, Apple is delivering products that will create renewed interest,” he said.

iPhone 17 Pro: “Apple is delivering products that will create renewed interest”

He says the iPhone 17 Air could play an important role in drawing consumers back into retail stores. “The iPhone 17 Air feels differentiated enough that people would consider visiting a store to see it in person. This presents an opportunity for operators and retailers to tempt users into an upgrade purchase, often with the lure of an attractive trade-in offer, given the substantial residual value of older iPhones,” he said.

“The iPhone 17 Air feels differentiated enough that people will consider visiting a store to see it in person. This does not necessarily mean they will purchase this specific model in the line-up, but it presents an opportunity for operators and retailers to tempt users into an upgrade purchase, often with the lure of an attractive trade-in offer, given the substantial residual value of older iPhones. This is very valuable at a time when people are holding onto their smartphones for longer than ever”.

Pro models critical
While the Air may grab attention for its sleekness, analysts highlighted the enduring profitability of the Pro range.

The update to the iPhone Pro models is significant. They are the most profitable part of Apple’s iPhone portfolio, and CCS Insight research shows that in mature markets like Western Europe and the US, more than 40% of Apple users have a Pro model,” said Wood.

Although Apple has raised the price of the Pro variant, all other models remain flat in dollar terms – a sign, Wood argues, of the competitive intensity of the smartphone market and Apple’s determination to keep pressure on Samsung and other rivals.

This is quickly gathering momentum, and with Apple now offering the iPhone 17 Air with eSIM support only, we expect the trend to accelerate,” said Wood.

Broader ecosystem bets
Alongside the new phones, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 3, which Pescatore described as “a massive upgrade” with real-time translation capabilities. “People prefer to use an audio device rather than a watch, and some of the new features further strengthen Apple’s offering,” he said, adding that health and fitness remain central themes across the ecosystem.

These other devices may not grab the headlines, but they serve as a key means to further integrate Apple into people’s lives through their existing phones and upgrade cycles,” Pescatore noted.

Holiday season boost
Both analysts believe the refreshed line-up will provide momentum into the crucial holiday shopping period.

Ultimately, this new device will bring a sense of newness to the iPhone, which has remained the same for too long. This in itself provides excitement among Apple’s loyal core iPhone base, which will still sell millions,” said Pescatore.

IDC analysis Francisco Jeronimo says the strategic positioning of the iPhone 17 Air sees a parallel with the launch of the MacBook Air in 2008 and the iPad Air in 2013,

“This new product targets a specific market segment that prioritises aesthetics, in-hand comfort, and portability over maximum camera capabilities or longer battery life. This product aims to improve sales in the segment between the standard version and the Pro Max version, as the Plus was never able to establish itself as a strong sales performer, being outperformed most of the time by the Pro and Pro Max versions of the previous generation. The iPhone 17 Air offers similar specs to the standard iPhone 17, but it is positioned as a different model and a more desirable kind of premium device, which will help Apple establish a new premium, non-Pro tier that can help grow the overall ASP, which the Plus version never did”.

]]> UK iPhones will continue to be made in China, Apple confirmed today in its first-quarter report.

CEO Tim Cook (abve) said Apple expects most iPhones sold in the US to be manufactured in India, while production of iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and AirPods will largely shift to Vietnam. This move is part of Apple’s strategy to reduce the impact of US tariffs by diversifying its supply chain away from China.

However, most Apple products sold outside the US will continue to be made in China. The tariffs affecting Apple are mainly the 20 per cent IEEPA-related US duties on Chinese imports.

The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) is a US federal law that authorises the President to regulate international commerce when a national emergency is declared in response to a threat from outside the US.This law was enacted in 1977 and gives the President broad authority to control economic transactions.

Some accessories face a total tariff rate of 145 per cent due to additional levies. Most of Apple’s core products are not affected by the new global tariffs introduced in April. The company estimates a $900 million tariff impact for the quarter, assuming no changes in policy.

Moost Apple products sold outside the US will continue to be made in China.

Apple reported a strong start to the year, with $95.4 billion in sales over the past three months, up from $90.8 billion the previous year. Profits rose to $24.8 billion, compared with $23.6 billion last year. Gross margin also increased slightly.

To reassure investors, Apple has raised its dividend to 26 cents per share (up from 25 cents) and announced a $100 billion share buyback programme to support its stock price.

We’re reporting strong quarterly results, including double-digit growth in Services,” said CEO Tim Cook. “We were pleased to introduce the iPhone 16e, along with powerful new Macs and iPads built on Apple silicon. We’re also proud to have reduced our carbon emissions by 60 per cent over the past 10 years.”

Ben Wood, Chief Analyst at CCS Insight, commented:

Apple delivered another strong performance, but the weakening macroeconomic situation and tariff uncertainty continue to cast a shadow over performance for the rest of the year.

It’s little surprise that Apple has been working hard to optimise its supply chain and inventory, given the current turbulence. Previous investments in India are paying dividends, but it’s impossible to divert huge volumes away from China in the short term, given how entrenched its manufacturing and supply networks are.

I’m surprised Apple’s CFO stated that the company has seen little ‘pull-ahead demand’ for the iPhone in light of the recent tariff turbulence. I had expected an uptick in sales as consumers tried to second-guess future price rises.”

The iPhone SE and basic iPhone 14 models are staying in the iPhone lineup which should help to maintain used value of these models as the iPhone 16 now moves to the top of the tree.

The iPhone 16 range is the usual standard (£799) Plus (£899), Pro (£999) , and the Pro Max (£1,199) models. Starting at the iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display, while the Plus model is a bump to a 6.7-inch screen. The Pro models have slightly larger displays compared to previous Pros, with a 6.3-inch screen and the Pro Max boasting a 6.9-inch display.  Rumours that the ’16’ would be eSIM-only in the UK ad EU were unfounded.

The ’14’s are now £599 and £699 but the ‘Pro’ variants have been dropped leaving the SE as a £429 entry point.

An addition on the 16 models is the “Capture” button, designed to improve the camera experience by allowing users to take photos, zoom, and focus with intuitive gestures. The Action Button, previously only available on Pro variants, is now available across the range

The 16’s A18 chip, delivering up to 30 per cent faster performance than its predecessor. A 48MP primary sensor improves low-light photography, alongside a 2x telephoto zoom feature. Pro models come with even more advanced camera capabilities, such as a potential 5x optical zoom and enhanced ultra-wide lenses.

Additionally, the 16 series suppors AI-driven features like Apple Intelligence which will be the main driver of iPhone upgrades to come. However the main AI features won’t  be coming to the UK as software updates until December.

The Pro’s main enhancements over the base ’16’ is with a more powerful A18 Pro chip and enhanced lenses and camera software.

CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood reckons the combination of Apple Intelligence and new camera features on the iPhone 16 will help spur upgrades from loyal Apple customers, particularly as Apple is positioning this latest update as being a future-proof purchase for customers wanting to get Apple Intelligence features as they roll out over the next few years.

“There is a growing feeling that smartphone updates have become a bit boring. Apple is not immune to this trend and is betting on software and AI to breathe new life into its most important product to reignite consumer interest and drive upgrade purchases. As expected, Apple Intelligence features will roll out progressively over the next few months and years. However, at present, a notable exclusion is the EU, where Apple is in a stand-off over compliance with the Digital Markets Act. We will be watching closely to see how European consumers react to missing out on the new Apple Intelligence features and whether it affects demand for the iPhone 16.

Wood: Apple Intelligence features will roll out progressively over the next few months and years

“Many of the features being offered by Apple Intelligence are similar to those previously showcased by Google and Samsung. However Apple put a heavy focus on privacy as a differentiator. CCS Insight’s research indicates that despite the enthusiasm for AI, about 43% of UK consumers surveyed expressed concerns about privacy and data security.

16 Pro and Pro Max models get slight size ump due to thnner bezels

“Camera Control was one of the biggest stories beyond Apple Intelligence. We believe it represents a concerted effort by Apple to allow users to interact with their iPhones in new ways in the era of AI. Although Camera Control will improve the overall experience of taking pictures and shooting videos it also allows people to trigger searches based on what they can see. This is something Google has been working on for years with visual search but Apple is hoping Camera Control will make it easier than ever for consumers to take advantage of this capability.

“We believe many people will immediately jump to the conclusion that Camera Control is merely a glorified shutter button for the camera. Although it does provide this capability it offers much more than that, its ability to offer additional capabilities including visual AI-powered search is very significant.”

Apple has revamped and strengthened its iPad lineup with a new range of devices. The range includes the new M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro.

The M4 chip has appeared just six months after the launch of the M3 last November and consists of 28 billion transistors built using second-generation 3-nanometer technology.

iPad Pro: 13″ with M4 chip starts at £1.,000

At just 5.3mm thick, the new iPad Pros are the thinnest Apple products ever released. The 11-inch model costs from £999 depending on storage, and the 13-inch model starts at £1,299. The iPad Air starts at £599 for the 12-inch version rising to £799 for the 13-inch editions.

But the value proposition was ctiticised by top Apple You Tuber Luke Miani  who said “this is an outrageously-priced machine that is only going to appeal to the most die-hard of iPad Pro fans” said

M4 Apple’s fastest Neural Engine capable of up to 38 trillion operations per second
iPad Air: cheaper price plont with the M2 chip

At just 5.3mm thick, the new iPad Pros are the thinnest Apple products ever released

The unexpected introduction of the very latest in the iPad Pro, significant performance jumps, updates to key apps such as Final Cut, and an emphasis on the AI capability delivered by Apple’s integrated approach to making products made for a compelling launch. It could just give the iPad range the shot in the arm it needs,” said CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood.

“These devices represent an incredible feat of engineering in terms of design, form factors, and features,” added Paolo Pescatore, analyst, and founder of PP Foresight.

The new lineup includes significant improvements that will appeal to a broad range of users, consumers, and businesses alike. Importantly, this comes at a time when current iPad owners will be looking for an upgrade. Whether that be an all-in-one Mac or a more portable touchscreen, there’s now a clearer distinction at the high end, presenting choices for those that want a bigger screen and more or less processing power.

This is a pivotal moment as Apple seeks to give this segment a major boost amidst declining quarterly sales YoY. It also represents a final step closer to ditching the laptop altogether given the slew of new features and multitasking capabilities. The new premium chips will be a big draw among users and developers, which will allow the porting of the same services across devices.”

HMD, which now stands for ‘Human Mobile Devices’ has launched a range of ‘Pulse’ branded phones designed to be repairable by consumers.

They are the HMD Pulse Pro, (price to be announced) HMD Pulse+ (£129) and HMD Pulse (£99).

The HMD Pulse range is built so owners can replace a damaged display, fix a bent charging port, or change a depleted battery themselves using a self-repair kit from iFixit starting from £17.99.

HMD Pulse: end-users can fix broken screens and replace batteries

Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, said “HMD’s commitment to designing phones with repairability in mind is an encouraging shift in our throwaway culture. We’re keen to collaborate as they work towards making repairable phones the norm, not the exception.

iFixit yourself

HMD says its research indicates 41 per cent of Gen Z would be more likely to purchase an electrical device if they could repair it themselves at home

HMD predicts that three out of every four devices it sells in Europe in 2024 will be repairable, up from one in three in 2023, demonstrating a significant shift in consumer purchase habits.

Ben Wood, Chief Analyst CCS Insight, said: “Repairability is a hot topic for consumers. CCS Insight has seen interest in repairing mobile phones increase significantly in both the EU and USA over the last year.

“Approximately 55 per cent of those surveyed in the EU said they would like to have a device that’s outside its warranty period repaired at a reasonable cost rather than replacing it with a new device. In the US interest is also strong, at an impressive 49 per cent. We also note that 47 per cent of EU consumers and 48 per cent of US consumers express readiness to pay slightly more for environmentally friendly products which underlines an appetite for more repairable products.”

]]> The Mobile Phone Museum has partnered with the PK Porthcurno, Museum of Global Communications in a new exhibition on the 40-year history of the mobile phone.

The Mobile Phone Museum, was started as an online resource by CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood and now has more than 2,700 devices in its collection

The  ‘Going Mobile’ event is sponsored by Vodafone UK and includes over 70 phones and objects selected from the Mobile Phone Museum’s collection which ranges from the earliest ‘brick’ devices of the 1980s, through flip phones, sliders, and clamshells, to the latest smartphones. It will be the first time that the phones have been on public display as a collection.

The exhibition covers the development of mobile phone communications dating back to 1840 with a combination of photos, objects, illustrations, and animations. It explains the evolution of the ‘generations’, how a mobile phone call works, and the timeline of mobile milestones?

Said Ben Wood:

“When it started. the Mobile Phone Museum was conceived as a virtual museum hosted online at mobilephonemuseum.com. We did not think it was realistic to have a physical museum given the ongoing costs and time involved. The pandemic had begun a permanent physical location was a non-starter. n. We also felt that a virtual museum enabled it to have global reach with relatively limited overheads. Also, it gave us a chance to build the collection and the collateral that went with it.

“However, we’ve had so many requests from people who want to see some of our collection that we have partnered with PK Porthcurno, Museum of Global Communications. Working with PK Porthcurno will also help us to continue developing the education goals for the Mobile Phone Museum charity with a focus on inspiring the next generation of engineers and designers in the UK by using our extensive collection of devices and learning resources.”

Wood: Working with PK Porthcurno will also help us to continue developing the education goals for the Mobile Phone Museum charity

Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer, Vodafone added:

“Vodafone made the first UK mobile phone call in 1985, so the exhibition is a great way to bring that history to life. Vodafone has long relationships with both PK Porthcurno and the Mobile Phone Museum, so it was fantastic to be able to bring the two together. A number of our engineers trained at the college which used to be on the site of the museum, so Porthcurno is very much in Vodafone’s DNA.”

Going Mobile: open to the public until next October

??Julia Twomlow, Chief Executive and Creative Director, PK Porthcurno said,?

“We had great fun working with the Mobile Phone Museum’s fabulous collection which the has put together in the last few years. Looking back at the history and rapid evolution of mobile technology was thought-provoking for all of us. Today, they are so much part of our lives that it’s hard to remember a time when we were without them.”

The lack of headline-grabbing updates will disappoint some but isn’t a surprise given the maturity of the iPhone and Watch. It reflects just how refined the iPhone and Watch devices are and how tough it has become to deliver truly disruptive updates every year”, said CCS insight chief analyst Ben Wood

The move to a USB-C connector is a success story for EU regulators over big tech”

The move to a USB-C connector is a success story for EU regulators over big tech despite efforts by Apple to resist it in 2020. It will irk some people but ultimately, it’s a victory for common sense becoming the standard connector for all consumer electronics devices.

“It’s good to see 5x optical zoom on the iPhone Pro Max. This definitely narrows the gap on Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra devices which have had 10x optical zoom for several years. The camera is one of the most important features for consumers on smartphones so this is a positive step. Replacing the ringer switch with an Action Button is a small but useful tweak to the iPhone design. I think I’ll configure it for quick access to the camera but sure there will be lots of interesting use cases for various apps”, said Wood.

PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore said the new iPhone line-up will be a “crowd-pleaser among the millions who own older devices that can’t download the latest iOS and will be itching to upgrade”

The new line-up will be a crowd-pleaser among the millions who own older devices that can’t download the latest iOS and will be itching to upgrade. There is an iPhone for everyone catering for different habits supported by numerous trade-in and recycling programs. Significant enhancements to the camera’s optical zoom will help Apple compete head-on with rivals like Samsung, thus enticing users to switch to iPhone”.

But Apple may have to deal with some supply chain issues according to Pescatore.

Arguably, its biggest hurdle will be overcoming any supply chain disruption. Underlined by a separate deal that will see Qualcomm continuing to supply Apple with 5G modems for smartphones through 2026″.

Pescatore -there is now an iPhone for everyone

“This is a major boost to Qualcomm and a sign that Apple is still working on its own 5G chipset and perhaps anticipating any future delays. Designing modems and RF systems for smartphones is no easy feat and should not be underestimated as underlined by this deal. This uncertainty, along with concerns for a slowdown in smartphone sales is causing unrest, making it harder than ever to predict the future.

The European Parliament has passed a law for Apple and other manufacturers to move to the USB-C charging port.

The move has been debated for months, with a previous Mobile News article outlining the EU’s plans to make the move in 2024.

The law will mostly affect Apple as it still produces its own Lightning cable, but it is reported that Apple could be working towards changing to a USB-C on the iPhone as it has already done with the MacBook and iPad.

All new mobile phones, tablets, headphones, cameras, speakers, etc., sold in the EU by the end of 2024 will be required to have a USB Type-C charging port, and this will extend to laptops in 2026.

The new law had 602 votes in favour with 13 against and eight abstentions. New obligations will encourage re-use of chargers and is part of a wide effort across the EU to reduce e-waste- but the UK will not have to follow suit.

European Parliament’s rapporteur Alex Agius Saliba said: “The common charger will finally become a reality in Europe. We have waited more than ten years for these rules, but we can finally leave the current plethora of chargers in the past.

“This future-proof law allows for the development of innovative charging solutions in the future, and it will benefit everyone – from frustrated consumers to our vulnerable environment.

“These are difficult times for politics, but we have shown that the EU has not run out of ideas or solutions to improve the lives of millions in Europe and inspire other parts of the world to follow suit”

Analyst comment

Ben Wood of CCS Insight believes the EU made the right decision

CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood added: “It is now inevitable that Apple will have to capitulate and transition to USB-C on the iPhone 15 when it arrives in 2023.”

“This is a victory for common sense. Although Apple has a huge installed base of lighting cable powered devices, the ubiquity of USB-C across all consumer electronics products means that harmonising on USB-C makes perfect sense.”

“Irrespective of whether the UK government mandates the move to USB-C or not, UK consumers will get the technology by default. It will make no sense for consumer electronics manufacturers to offer devices with anything else.”

The devices and subscription service are part of Nokia’s plan for sustainability

HMD Global has launched four new Nokia devices alongside Circular, a new subscription service available in the UK and Germany.

The Nokia X30 5G is the brand’s most eco-friendly device yet, made with a 100 per cent recycled aluminium frame and a 65 per cent recycled plastic back.

It features a 50MP camera with AI and optical image stabilisation (OIS) for ultra-wide angle and detailed nighttime imagery.

The Nokia G60 5G aims to be a phone that users can keep for longer as it promises three years of Android upgrades, three years of monthly security updates and an extended three-year warranty.

The Nokia C31 is equipped with a three-day battery life, AI-powered battery saving features and triple rear and selfie cameras powered by Google.

New model

The company has also introduced its newest tablet, the Nokia T21 and a subscription service with sustainability at its core.

Circular provides a range of eco-friendly rewards for customers to keep their phones for longer and to give them a second life.

Within the subscription model, Nokia devices go through recycling, refurbishing and re-subscribing or to a charity that needs it most.

HMD Global CEO Florian Seiche said: “ We have introduced Circular, a truly circular subscription model that rewards people who extend the lifecycle of their phones.

“We build our devices with more recycled materials and continue to boost our longevity heritage with software and security updates.

“We are working hard to live this approach as a company, with our business-wide sustainability pledges that shows our commitment to continue to work harder to protect tomorrow.”

CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood added: “CCS Insight’s research shows that roughly half of consumers in key European markets believe that creating products that last longer is helpful and positive for the environment.

“HMD continues to encourage consumers to keep their device for longer and with Circular, it also means devices stay out of landfill.

“Electronic waste is an issue the whole industry must address and services like Circular are a positive step towards creating change.”

Circular is available from September 1 for selected Nokia devices.

Pricing and availability

Nokia X30 5G is available from late September and starts at £399 and is available on Circular subscription for £25 per month.

Nokia G60 5G is available from September 1 and starts at £249 per month and is available on Circular for £12.50 per month.

Nokia C31’s UK availability and price is yet to be determined.
