SMARTY Mobile has launched data-only SIMS specifically designed for devices that only require data, ranging from £5 for 2GB data to £20 for unlimited data.

SMARTY’s data-only SIM also offers an EU roaming data plan, which includes 12GB data, thus making travelling in the EU less of a hassle.

The SIM also protects you from cyber theft and eliminates public Wi-Fi risks.

New and existing customers will also not face annual price rises, as SMARTY Mobile’s 30-day rolling plan claims that customers won’t be forced to accept annual price increases during the term of their contract.

SMARTY is also on its way to roll out 5G connectivity, powered by Three’s network, at no extra cost.

CCS Insight: 5G connections to pass 1bn by end of 2022 https://mobilenewscwp.co.uk/news/article/ccs-insight-5g-connections-pass-1bn-end-2022/ https://mobilenewscwp.co.uk/news/article/ccs-insight-5g-connections-pass-1bn-end-2022/#respond Tue, 14 Jun 2022 13:01:38 +0000 https://mncwp.tailrd.cloud/ccs-insight-5g-connections-pass-1bn-end-2022/ The analyst firm forecasts 5G connections to hit 1.2bn by the end of the year

The analyst firm forecasts 5G connections to hit 1.2bn by the end of the year

5G connections are on course to exceed one billion this year, according to analyst firm CCS Insight.

CCS Insight predicts that 5G connections will hit 1.2 billion by the end of this year, despite the challenging economic climate.

This figure will see the number almost double from last year, while a third of worldwide connections in 2026 are forecast to be 5G at 4.5 billion.

“Despite 5G’s foundational years being clouded by the Covid-19 pandemic and the problems it created, the market is in a stronger position as we enter the second half of 2022″, said CCS Insight senior analyst James Manning-Smith.

“The world still faces a bleak macroeconomic and geopolitical outlook in 2022, coupled with supply chain difficulties. But the transition of mobile subscribers to 5G networks is set to make good progress, with 5G connections forecast to nearly double this year to 1.2 billion.”

Rising: 5G connections will pass 4.5m by 2026, CCS Insight estimates

Exceeding expectations

5G adoption has exceeded CCS Insight’s initial predictions, with the analysts predicting connections to reach one billion by the end of 2023, back in 2018.

Almost half (44 per cent) of the 681m smartphones sold this year are expected to come with 5G connectivity, adds Manning-Smith.

“A strong base of 5G-ready mobile phones is developing,” said Manning-Smith, who says that 5G is being prioritised, amid a challenging time for vendors and chipset manufacturers.

The connectivity will become mature in North America and Western Europe by 2026, however its delayed transition in markets including India, the Middle East and Africa will remain evident.

As for 5G fixed wireless connections, CCS Insight predicts this to reach seven million this year, up 160 per cent.

Virgin Media O2 has announced 64 per cent of London’s population has access to 5G connectivity and one of the largest 5G footprints.

The provider has committed to reaching 50pc of the UK’s population by 2023, and last year it boosted 4G network capacity in over 41,000 postcodes across the capital.

Virgin Media O2 has made gigabit broadband available to more than six million Londoners and is expanding its Wi-Fi network across the Tube by offering connectivity that covers 97 per cent of the Underground network.

Research by Oxford Analytica showed investment in mobile connectivity and full-fibre could create 68,000 jobs in London while boosting its economy by £16bn by 2026.

Virgin Media O2 chief technology officer Jeanie York said: “Providing a 5G boost is part of our long standing investment in the capital and our mission to upgrade the UK through our ongoing investment in 4G, 5G, fixed broadband and innovative new services.

“We are taking a customer-centric approach to our mobile network strategy, which centres on optimising our network where our customers need them most.

“This means focusing on densifying our coverage where customers are going to feel the most benefit, such as busy urban cities like London, while also investing to extend coverage in less populated areas.

And with our Volt proposition, we can offer 5G plus gigabit broadband together, giving Londoners the best connectivity in and out of their homes.”

Strong adoption of 5G in the coming years will take worldwide connections to 3.6bn in 2025

Worldwide connections to 5G networks is expected to treble to 670 million by the end of this year, despite the global pandemic.

That is according to research from analyst firm CCS Insight, following “sluggish developments” made last year in the earlier stages of the pandemic.

CCS Insight forecasts the figure to reach 3.6 billion connections worldwide in 2025, with strong adoption in the next 18 to 24 months.

By the middle of the decade, more than 75 per cent of mobile phones in North America, Western Europe and Asia-Pacific will have transitioned to 5G networks, adds CCS Insight.

“Although our near-term expectations have been dented, we remain optimistic that the global mobile industry will overcome these temporary challenges and will achieve 3.6 billion 5G connections worldwide in 2025,” said CCS Insight vice president of forecasting Marina Koytcheva.

Leaders

South Korea and China continue to lead the way with 5G deployment, with a fifth of mobile phones in South Korea already using 5G.

And in China, the pace of adoption has seen seven out of 10 smartphones sold in the first three months of this year featuring 5G technology.

However progress in Western Europe has been mixed due to spectrum delays during the pandemic in some markets such as France, plus the uncertainty around Huawei.

But Koytcheva remains optimistic: “We have to give a nod to the role that smartphone-makers are playing in getting 5G handsets into people’s hands, with prices set to drop as low as $150 in 2022.”

“The global mobile phone market was dealt a significant blow by the pandemic and shrank by 13 per cent in 2020. Although its growth will remain sluggish in 2021 at just six per cent, suppressed by volatile demand and short supply of major components, the 5G segment will flourish and one in three mobile phones sold worldwide in 2021 will feature 5G.”

The research also the Internet of Things will have limited impact in the next five years, as the pandemic has led to delays in standards and commercial deployment, while 5G fixed wireless access is expected to remain a niche technology.
